Let’s Ruin Something with Advertising

I apologize for the quality of this photo; I prefer closer shots of T-shirts and just scaled this one up. I hate doing that; it’s a “no-no” when it comes to design…but this is a blog about T-shirts and I’m running it…so I’m breaking the rule because I can. But enough about that. This satirical gem is another beauty by someecards and is available for purchase at BustedTees. The illustration shows a beautiful landscape (the beauty is implied) and the copy reads, Let’s ruin something with advertising. This is equal parts funny and sad. It’s funny because that’s the direction our culture has been going in for quite some time and it’s sad for the very same reason. I’ve actually been considering placing ads on this blog even though I was completely against the idea when I started it. I don’t have anything against advertising in and of itself, of course — in fact, a lot of what I do as a designer is in the realm of advertising — I was just against the idea of advertising on this blog. I liked the idea of it being an ad-free zone. [Forget about the fact that each blog post is an endorsement of sorts, thereby qualifying it as advertising...free advertising, but advertising all the same.] This blog is far from a beautiful landscape so I doubt advertising would ruin it, but there’s really only one way to find out. I’d like to know what my readers think (…the few of you that are still with me since I switched domains a while back). Leave me a comment on this post and let me know if you think placing ads on ATshirtBlog.com is a good idea or a bad one. If you think it’s a good idea, tell me why. If you think it’s a bad idea, send me money. There’s a donate button in the column on the left. As of right now, I’m still unsure about the whole thing. But when I see a tee that I like telling me, “Let’s ruin something with advertising,” I’m thinking maybe it’s a sign. What do you think?
